Tea house · Vienna

Slow down, steep.

Japanese green teas, served at low tables in a quiet room of wood and clay. One pot, as long as you like.

Nothing to add, nothing to take away.

The teas

Four teas, chosen each season.

We drink them first. What we would not serve at home does not go on the list.

  • Sencha, first flushGrassy and bright, from Shizuoka. Steep 60 s at 70°.€14
  • HojichaRoasted, warm, low in caffeine. Good in the evening.€11
  • GenmaichaGreen tea with toasted rice. Nutty and soft.€10
  • Ceremonial matchaStone ground, for whisking. 30 g tin.€26

The ceremony

Forty minutes, one bowl.

On Saturdays we prepare matcha the old way, for six guests at a time. You watch, then whisk your own.

  1. Clean

The bowl and the whisk are warmed with hot water.

  2. Whisk

Two scoops, a little water, a fast W with the wrist.

  3. Turn

The bowl turns twice before the first sip.

Questions

Before you come.

Do I need to book?
For the ceremony, yes. For tea, it helps on Saturdays, otherwise just come in.
Can I buy tea to take home?
Every tea on the list comes in tins of 50 or 100 g.
Are children welcome?
Yes, if they enjoy a quiet room. We have soft cushions and cold barley tea.

A table is waiting.

Book for two or for six. We keep the room calm, so there are only eight tables.
